What’s in Nutriterra?

All the benefits of DHA, EPA, and ALA
Read more

Nutriterra is the world’s first plant-based source of total omega-3 nutrition.  With groundbreaking plant technology, we’ve taken what canola does well — producing ALA — and enhanced it by replicating the pathway microalgae uses to synthesize DHA, EPA, and other long-chain fatty acids. 1 The result is an entirely new source of DHA and EPA, with 30% total omega-3 content, and DHA content similar to marine oils.2

How is Nutriterra made?

With science and sunshine

Nutriterra is the result of over 20 years of research. Nuseed partnered with CSIRO to develop the most complex bioengineered plant ever brought to market. 6 Sophisticated biotechnology enhances canola with microalgae genetics to produce DHA, EPA and double the amount of ALA found in conventional canola. 2

These omega-3-producing traits carry forward in future generations of Nuseed Omega-3 Canola plants, meaning production can be scaled like any other crop. This once-in-a-generation advancement can help meet the world’s growing need for DHA and EPA using existing canola production and processing infrastructure.

Nutriterra is expeller-pressed and quality-tested, with an improved sensory experience compared to other marine oils, expanding the range of formulation possibilities. 1

Why create a plant-based source of DHA & EPA?

To fill the gap between ocean supply and human demand
Read more

Nuseed collaborated on a two-decade-long project to create a plant-based source of omega-3 nutrition because our scientists recognized that marine sources of DHA and EPA, like fish and microalgae, would not be sufficient to meet rising demand for omega-3 oils. 1 Without new sources of DHA and EPA, there will be a potential supply gap of one million metric tonnes of omega-3s by 2030. 3

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reports that 65% to 70% of global fish stocks are fished to capacity, 4 while demand for omega-3 oil grows at 3.5% every year. Nutriterra is a renewable, scalable, plant-based source of total omega-3 nutrition that has the potential to double the world’s supply of DHA using only 5% of existing canola fields, 5 expanding the availability of critical omega-3 nutrition.

Is Nutriterra safe and healthy for human consumption?

Safe and effective

Nuseed Omega-3 Canola is approved for cultivation in the US, Canada, and Australia. Clinical studies have shown that the only difference between Nutriterra and standard canola oil, which is included in foods throughout the world, is that Nutriterra contains DHA, EPA, and other long-chain fatty acids. 12

Nutriterra is filed with the FDA as a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) for use in food and supplements. 12 The research demonstrating Nutriterra’s safety was reviewed by the FDA, and is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). 13  Subsequent clinical trials have demonstrated that the omega-3s in Nutriterra are bioavailable, and when consumed, improve LC-PUFA profiles, omega-3 status, and the omega-6: omega-3 ratio. 1

Why are omega-3s important?

Omega-3s support lifelong wellness
Read more

The benefits of long-chain omega-3s in human health are well documented. DHA and EPA intake can have a positive impact on brain, eye, and heart health, and other aspects of whole-body health. 11 However, more than 80% of the population does not consume enough of these essential nutrients and global demand is growing faster than current sources can sustainably supply.

How does Nutriterra attract new customers?

Consumers are ready for a new source of omega-3
Read more

Qualtrics research has found that 64% of vitamin, supplement, and mineral consumers prefer plant-based omega-3s. 7 This US grown product can reach new customers who have dietary restrictions and preferences that make fish and algae-based solutions a poor fit. Nutriterra is a revolution in nutrition that can be readily scaled to meet the growing need for omega-3s.
